How Can Chiropractic Treatment Help Text Neck?

Written By Coastal Integrative Health on October 9, 2017

There’s a new buzzword within the health industry – text neck. And this latest phenomenon is being caused by our active use of technologies, in particular, handheld devices and laptops.

According to recent studies, this condition is no laughing matter as text neck is becoming a worrying “epidemic” that only looks set to increase.

Why?

Well, Dr. Kenneth Hansraj’s studies demonstrated how the weight of our head, on average, is 10-12lb. However, the weight we place on our spines increases dramatically the more we move our heads forward to look at our devices. Tilt your head to an angle of 15 degrees and your head weighs 27lb, but tilt it to 60 degrees and it could weigh up to 60lb.

With this in mind, it’s no wonder many of us are now experiencing pains in our spines and/or necks, perhaps even suffering from long-term damage.

What Are the Symptoms of Text Neck?

Neck pain and soreness are the most common symptoms of text neck. However, as these symptoms advance, you may start to experience upper back pain which may feel like a harsh, nagging pain or could include severe muscle spasms.

Other symptoms include pain and tightness in the shoulders, and even neurological symptoms if a nerve has been pinched. This may be a pain that extends all the way down your arm to your hand.

The Benefits of Chiropractic Treatment for Text Neck

If you think you may have some symptoms of text neck, you should seek chiropractic treatment in Shallotte as soon as possible, especially if you’re conscious about how much time you’re spending looking downward at devices.

Your chiropractor will be able to advise how you can prevent your head from tilting forward as much, offering tips on how you can improve your overall posture, too. This work will involve making sure your shoulders are back, your back’s straight, and you’re keeping your spine in a neutral position while looking at various devices.

During your appointment, your chiropractor will also provide you with a detailed treatment plan that may incorporate manual adjustments and massage therapy. These visits to your chiropractor along with the exercises you can do at home should start to ease your symptoms of text neck quickly and effectively.
