Sciatica: A Real Pain in the Butt

Sciatica is a pain, weakness, numbness or tingling in the leg caused by an injury or pressure on the sciatic nerve. This nerve has a path from the tailbone in the lower back, down the back of each leg and controls muscles in the back of the knee and lower leg. Sciatic pain can be intense in some people, while others may describe it as burning, dull or tingling.

Pain of Sciatica

Sciatica pain is one-sided and the leg on that side may feel weak. Strangely, some sufferers report pain in the hip or some other part of the leg and a feeling of numbness at the back of the calf or sole of the foot. Try walking with all of that going on in one leg.

Someone dealing with sciatica may not realize something is happening because the pain begins slowly and gets worse as time goes along. It may reach its peak if you sit or stand for long periods and, especially, at night. Pressure does not help and neither will bending backwards or walking more than a few feet.

This strange pain is not an illness, but rather a symptom of a different problem. Most people have no need for alarm because the pain of sciatica can point to many and various conditions, which need to be proven by tests to rule them out. One of the conditions looming large on radar is multiple sclerosis

Fixing Sciatica

Low back pain is disabling and can result in disability, early retirement and a decrease in quality of life. Spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) is a common choice of treatment, although the effects of the treatment is still subject to dispute. An alternative treatment would be ice/heat therapy.

The medical professional most often chosen to deal with back problems is the chiropractor. A consultation can reveal information about low back pain that is currently obscure. Contact us to arrange that consultation today. Waiting any longer can be hazardous to your health.
